Jobs & Employment

Situated in North London, approximately 10 miles from the city centre, Enfield occupies an advantageous position between urban London and the greener spaces of Hertfordshire. The borough comprises several distinct districts including Enfield Town, Palmers Green, and Winchmore Hill, each with its own character.

Enfield’s history stretches back to Roman times, but it was during the medieval period that it began to flourish as a small market town. The Royal Small Arms Factory, established in 1816, brought industrial growth and employment to the area, manufacturing weapons for the British military until its closure in 1988. This industrial heritage remains visible in parts of eastern Enfield.

The western half of Enfield, particularly areas like Winchmore Hill and Bush Hill Park, developed as railways expanded in the Victorian era, bringing middle-class housing and a suburban feel that persists today. The eastern section evolved differently, with more industrial uses and later housing developments.

Enfield offers a broad selection of property styles spanning various eras. Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses dominate many streets, particularly around Enfield Town and Winchmore Hill.

The eastern side features 1920s and 1930s semi-detached houses with generous gardens, while Bush Hill Park contains larger detached Edwardian properties. Post-war estates can be found throughout, and more recent apartment developments have appeared near transport hubs.

The most sought-after properties can be found in Winchmore Hill, particularly around The Green and Broad Walk, where substantial detached homes sit on tree-lined streets. The Grange Park area between Enfield and Winchmore Hill features large period houses with planning consent for extensions. Bush Hill Park’s Private Estate includes impressive detached Edwardian houses, while Chase Side has appealing Victorian properties.

Developments: Enfield is undergoing significant regeneration, particularly in the eastern part. The Meridian Water development near Angel Road is creating thousands of new homes alongside workspace, shops, and leisure facilities.

Smaller schemes include the transformation of former office buildings in Southbury Road into modern apartments, and the revitalisation of Enfield Town centre through the Palace Gardens Shopping Centre redevelopment.

North London area of Enfield offers excellent travel options across the capital and beyond.

  • Car & Road: Enfield sits alongside the A10 Great Cambridge Road, providing direct access to central London and the M25 orbital motorway, which is just a 10-minute drive north. The North Circular Road (A406) also runs nearby, connecting Enfield to other parts of North London.
  • Bus: The area is well served by numerous bus routes, with services running throughout Enfield, Palmers Green, and Winchmore Hill. Routes include the 192, 307, 313, and 377, connecting to nearby towns and Underground stations.

Enfield offers numerous fascinating places to explore, from historic sites to natural spaces that showcase the area’s varied appeal:

  • Forty Hall Estate: A magnificent Jacobean mansion set in stunning grounds with gardens, lakes, and woodland walks. This Grade I listed building houses a museum depicting life in the 17th century.
  • Myddelton House Gardens: Beautiful botanical gardens once home to renowned plantsman E.A. Bowles, featuring unusual plants, a carp lake, and impressive conservatory.
  • Enfield Town Market: Dating back to 1303, this traditional market operates Wednesday to Saturday, selling everything from fresh produce to crafts.
  • Trent Country Park: An expansive natural space spanning 413 acres with meadows, lakes, woodland and café, perfect for walking and outdoor activities.

North London’s Enfield offers a varied employment landscape with several significant sectors. Retail provides substantial work opportunities, centred around Palace Gardens Shopping Centre and retail parks along the A10 corridor.

The public sector, particularly Enfield Council and NHS facilities including Chase Farm Hospital, constitutes another major employer.

Light industry and logistics form a substantial part of the local economy, with numerous business parks located in eastern Enfield and along the A10/M25 corridor.
